On March 31, 2016, the Brown University Library will host the reception for the Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA) annual conference. As part of the conference, the Library is mounting an exhibit featuring two independent publishers from Brazil: Dulcinéia Catadora and Mariposa Cartonera, entitled “Cardboard Revolution: Cartoneras, Literacy, and Sustainable Publishing in Brazil.” The exhibit will be installed in the Finn Room cases at the Rockefeller Library.

Dulcinéia Catadora is a collective formed by people of diverse backgrounds and age groups – artists, writers, street cardboard collectors, and children – who design and public chapbooks with recycled cardboard covers. The collective buys cardboard from carroceiros (street collectors) at a fair price, cuts out pieces to create book covers and paints them one by one with gouache. It is a model of creative sustainable economy that supports street collectors and their families, as well as promotes reading and the work of new and unknown writers.

Mariposa Cartonera is an independent publisher from the northeastern city of Recife that promotes the work of emergent Brazilian authors and collaborates with people who make their living collecting and selling salvaged cardboard. Following the precepts of cartonerismo, Mariposa Cartonera has a strong commitment to literacy, civil rights, sustainability, and fair trade.
